  • A: Pneumocystis carinii (jiroveci) trophozoites in broncho-alveolar lavage (BAL) material.  Giemsa stain.  The trophozoites are small (size: 1 to 5 µm), and only their nuclei, stained purple, are visible (arrows).  AIDS patient seen in Atlanta, Georgia.
