Flumazenil [Mazicon, Romazicon]

Uses

  • Antagonizes CNS effects of Benzodiazepines.

  • Reverses (complete or partial) sedation (as seen in anesthesia) due to benzodiazepines

  • Seizure disorders [unlabeled use]

  • Encephalopathy [unlabeled use]

 

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to flumazenil

  • In antidepressant overdosage

  • Seizure prone individuals during labor and delivery

  •  Effects in children not known

 

Cautious Use (partial listing)

  •  Impaired hepatic function

  •  Pregnancy (category C)

  •  Nursing mothers

  •  Head injury

  •  Individuals physically dependent on benzodiazepines

 

Side Effects (Partial listing)

  • CNS: dizziness

  • Respiratory: Hypoventilation:

  • GI: nausea, vomiting
